Salary Starts:  $30,280.00

Reports to: Executive Director

Scheduled Hours: 9:30am - 6:30pm Monday - Thursday & 8 hours scheduled with Executive Director weekly

The Education Director is responsible for creating, implementing and executing all aspects of the Playhouse Merced Young Artists Conservatory program.

The Young Artists Conservatory Program includes, but is not limited to, all fall and spring semester based programming (on and off site), the Summer Youth Theatre Festival (on and off site), Playhouse Merced Presents (off site), Play Anywhere (off site), Play Anywhere JR (off site).

It is the job of the Education Director to expand the Young Artists Conservatory at Playhouse Merced by actively seeking new clients, building new community partnerships, and developing new programming that fulfills the needs and represents the youth of our community.


Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Hiring, overseeing, and assessing teachers, both on and off site (Conservatory, Play Anywhere/JR, Playhouse Merced Presents, Summer Youth Theatre Festival, etc.)

  • Sit in on, assists and attend Young Artists Conservatory programming both on and off site.  This may include attending first day of class, run-throughs, technical rehearsals and previews as necessary.

  • Host quarterly staff training to ensure that Playhouse Merced teaching standards are being met and maintained both on and off site.

  • Teach at least one class each term in one of the following areas:  Theatre, vocal music, or dance.

  • Facilitate the necessary staff needed to uphold Young Artists Conservatory safety and check in standards.  This includes welcoming families upon arrival, walking students into the building when appropriate, having someone available at all times in the lobby before, during and after classes for check in and check out.

  • Work to stay informed on new teaching styles, theatre techniques, and common core standards relevant to the success of the Young Artists Conservatory.

  • Facilitate the booking of school show performances.  This includes creating teaching packets that meet necessary common core standards, providing necessary documentation for students who will be missing school to perform in a school show performance, and bringing on necessary staff to help students with independent study when appropriate.

  • Develop and supervise the Young Artists Conservatory budget with the Executive Director.

  • Create and implement a yearly schedule of class(es) and daytime and after school programming both on and off site.

  • Create and implement the Summer Youth Theatre Festival class(es) and performances.

  • Schedule, produce, and direct a minimum of two yearly Showcases of Talent and/or other Conservatory productions.

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians and the larger Merced community.

  • Maintain regular communication with local schools and school districts about different opportunities (class offerings, outreach programs, school shows, etc).

  • Work with the Artist Director when there are shows utilizing children to establish and maintain communicate with parents/guardians and maintain a positive experience for school-aged participants.

  • Assist with school show cuts for time and content when necessary.

  • Communicate with staff in regards to all Young Artists Conservatory needs.

  • Assist the Executive Director in obtaining the rights for all productions, music tracks, and any necessary licensable materials as needed.

  • Assess community need for programs including acting, singing and dancing and other forms of performing arts, for performers of all ages and skill levels.

  • Education Director is responsible for maintaining a clean and organized office and rehearsal / classroom space for students, parents/guardians, and instructors.

  • Attend monthly Board of Director meeting held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm at Playhouse Merced.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with an emphasis in Theatre and Education.

  • Three or more years of experience working with young people (ages 5-17) in a theatrical and/or educational setting or equivalent combination of education and experience in theatre with an emphasis on experience working with young people (ages 5-17).


  • Must have a valid CA drivers license.

  • Must have reliable transportation with up to date proof of insurance.

  • Must have basic understanding of  Microsoft Suite.
