Educational Outreach Instructor

Playhouse Merced's Educational Outreach programs are in high demand offering a unique and exciting after school opportunity for Merced county youth to learn various performing arts techniques at their school or local youth organization program. 


As an Outreach Instructor, you will be a valuable member of a 3-4 person team of instructors who travel to local area schools / youth organizations. Most of the outreach educational programs are after school assignments for 3 - 5 weekdays each class is normally a 2-week assignment, then on to another location the following week.  


If you are one of those rare gems, a person not afraid to be goofy, who might just randomly burst out in song, can use a glue gun while reciting a favorite quote or monologue, and like to have fun while instructing our community's youth creatively, then we want to meet you!  Bring your A-game and enjoy the creative artistic journey of theatre arts education instruction for the incrtedible youth of our wonderfully diverse community!  


Educational Outreach Instructor:

  • Learn the show and curriculum - adding your own "spice" to our recipe.

  • Experience with youth, able to interact and engage as a creative mentor with all ages

  • Support and work as a reliable team member with fellow staff 

  • Enjoy working with youth ages 5 yr. - 17 yrs. of diverse cultures and personality types

  • Take initiative,  self-motivated, independant, task-oriented, communicate well and organized

  • Creative and able to instruct in areas of backdrop and prop creation, simple music, voice, and choreography, stage blocking, performing, line memorization, and simple costume design (training provided)

  • Ability to problem solve, think quickly and critically and able to pivot when a complex situation arises or presented with obstacles - always looking ahead using common sense

  • Outgoing, friendly, and unafraid to be silly yet continue to Lead a class commanding respect in a respectful and fun way

  • Adaptable with faculty, staff, and program changes or improvements

  • Understand or ability to learn basic light and sound equipment and able to set up and break down equipment during load in and load out, as well as run lights and sound during any and all shows (training provided)

  • Adhere to both Playhouse Merced and individual school site rules and regulations

Hours / Schedule:   Hours vary - Increased time will be inevitable with our growth.

  • 15 - 25 hours/wk during school bookings,  10 - 20 hours/wk during school breaks.

  • School bookings normally take place in the afternoons any time from 1:00pm-6:00pm; Tech Days (Thursdays) and Show Days (Fridays) have some morning hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:          High School Diploma or Equivalent


Experience:        

1+ years of volunteer/paid experience working with elementary school aged children (teacher assistant, child care, instructional aide)

1 - 2 years of theatre experience (education, technical, acting, singing, dance, stage crew, etc.)


MUSTS:                  

Be able to pass DOJ background check & TB Test

Have valid Driver's License

Be able to lift up to 25-30 lbs       

Have reliable means of transportation to Playhouse 


Desirable Qualifications:

Education:        Associates Degree in Theatre, Music, Child Development or Literary 

                              or attending courses in theater, child development, music


Skills:                  Bi-lingual / Multi-lingual a plus

                              Performing Arts Experience
